A car free area in the old town

One of the town bakeries |
| This is repeated shortly after, for safety’s sake, should someone have been busy in the fields and not listened properly to the first set of chimes. Of course bells are meant to be used and so christenings, funerals, weddings and church services are all noisily celebrated. It’s a cacophony of sound, but luckily one quickly becomes immune.
Maureilles has a little Cork museum. In the past cork was a major industry in the area and production is still ongoing. Debarked cork trees can be seen s by the roadside on the way to Le Boulou. The cork museum is also the town’s tourist office where maps of the local walking trails are available.
Maureillas is a genuine, authentic French village where tourism is definitely not a major industry. There are about 50 foreigners living here but otherwise the inhabitants are normal Frenchmen living their lives and working at their jobs. This is a living but also a very peaceful village. There are shopping centres in nearby towns: St. Jean (3 km) and Le Boulou (4 km).
